04 / About THE CLOISTER

A cloister is a covered walkway, a place of retreat set apart from the world outside. THE CLOISTER occupies the entire first floor, separated from the residential levels above — a space dedicated to the physical work of maintaining the body, with the seriousness that work deserves.

Two dedicated training zones serve men and women separately, each with its own changing room, shower, and locker area. The separation is not an afterthought — it is a design decision that reflects how the building’s community will actually use the space. Each zone has been sized for a community of ninety households, not under-specified for a brochure photograph.

Floor-to-ceiling glazing on the garden-facing side brings natural light deep into the training space. The orientation is deliberate: morning sun enters from the east without overheating the room by afternoon. Controlled climate maintains consistent conditions regardless of Nairobi’s seasonal temperature shifts.

The equipment specification is commercial-grade — the same standard found in dedicated fitness facilities, not the residential equipment that developers typically install to satisfy a brochure checkbox. The floor surface is impact-rated. The ceiling height accommodates overhead movements. The ventilation system handles the thermal load of a full training session.

THE CLOISTER is not named lightly. It is a place apart — a space where the noise of the day does not follow, and where the work of keeping well is given the architecture it requires.
